In a sweeping move to uphold digital integrity, tech titan Google has announced the suspension of a staggering 2.9 million advertiser accounts in India in 2024, as part of a global crackdown on ad policy violations. Alongside this, the platform eliminated 247.4 million advertisements from the Indian digital space alone.
“In India, 247.4 million ads were removed and 2.9 million advertiser accounts were suspended,” the company revealed in its annual Ads Safety Report. This sweeping enforcement underscores Google’s broader mission to cleanse the online ad ecosystem of scams, misleading content, and manipulative tactics.
Across the globe, the tech major took even bigger strides—removing 5.1 billion ads, restricting 9.1 billion, and suspending more than 39.2 million advertiser accounts. What stands out this year is Google’s focused battle against a rising digital menace: AI-generated ads that impersonate public figures to scam users.
To stay ahead of these digital tricksters, Google sharpened its Large Language Models (LLMs), rolling out over 50 enhancements that accelerated fraud detection and investigative efficiency. “The company also adapted its defences against ever-evolving scams, notably the rise of AI-generated public figure impersonation ads,” the report stated.
Working behind the scenes is a specialised unit of over 100 professionals, who have worked meticulously to overhaul policies and deploy protective measures. Their efforts led to the permanent removal of 700,000 ad accounts, specifically linked to scam operations. Thanks to this rigorous oversight, Google saw a 90% decline in reports related to impersonation scam ads over the past year.
The five most commonly breached ad policies, as noted in the report, include:
Fraudulent or misleading financial services
Trademark abuse
Network manipulation, such as system circumvention
Misuse of personalised ad mechanisms
Violations related to gambling and online gaming
As the digital landscape grows more complex, Google’s commitment to transparency and user safety becomes increasingly vital. With AI as both a threat and a tool, the platform is doubling down on proactive tech and human oversight to preserve the trust of billions.
