Google Rolls Out Temporary Chat Feature in Gemini

Google has started the wide rollout of its new “Temporary chat” feature, which was first announced in August. On the mobile app, the option now appears in the side panel next to the new chat button. According to a report by a common news outlet, the feature is also available on the Gemini web client, although it is not yet visible in the web version at the time of writing.

How Temporary Chat Works The option “Ask in a temporary chat” is visible in the prompt bar and above the model selector when a thread is active. Once the conversation ends, access to that chat is permanently removed.

Google explained, “Temporary chats don’t appear in Recent Chats or Gemini Apps Activity and aren’t used to train models or personalise your experience. To help respond to you and keep Gemini safe, temporary chats are saved for 72 hours.”

Since these chats do not save data, users will not receive personalised responses. Instead, Gemini provides a standard reply similar to what any new user without customised prompts would see. Users also cannot save information for future personalisation or give feedback on responses in temporary chats.

Personal Context Mode Alongside temporary chats, Google has introduced “Personal context,” which is enabled by default. This feature allows Gemini to use information from past conversations to shape future replies and suggestions.

For example, if a user has asked about Japanese culture or a favourite comic-book character, Gemini may include those interests in future recommendations. According to Google, this makes the interaction feel like working with an assistant that understands personal preferences.

Users retain full control of this feature. Within Settings > Personal Context > Your past chats with Gemini, they can disable personal context or erase conversation history through the Gemini Apps Activity menu. The rollout has begun for Google Gemini 2.5 Pro in select regions, with Gemini 2.5 Flash and wider availability expected soon.

Other Updates In related news, Google has launched Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, a new AI model for image generation and editing. Integrated into the Gemini app globally, the model, named Nano Banana, supports consistent edits, blending of multiple photos, multi-step modifications, and style transfers. All AI-generated visuals will carry visible and invisible SynthID watermarks for authenticity.
