In a move aimed at improving user experience, Google has reportedly begun expanding a key personalisation feature of Gemini to its free-tier users across the globe. The update marks a shift, as the feature was earlier available only to paid subscribers.
According to a tech publication, the “Past Chats” feature is now being rolled out to free users in all regions where Gemini is available, except Europe. Users in Europe are expected to receive the feature at a later date.
The Past Chats feature allows Gemini to refer to a user’s earlier conversations to deliver more personalised responses. With this enabled, users do not have to repeat information shared in previous chats when continuing a discussion.
For instance, if a user was researching a topic earlier, they can start a new chat without explaining their progress. Gemini can use the context from past interactions to provide relevant answers. Users can also ask the assistant, “Did you use any info from past chats,” in follow-up prompts to understand how responses were generated.
As per reports, Google has introduced a new “Personal context” page within Gemini’s settings. From here, users can turn the “Your past chats with Gemini” option on or off. Just below this setting, there is an “Instructions for Gemini” section that allows users to control how the assistant responds.
The feature is currently rolling out to free users in all supported regions, except Europe, where availability will come later.
Google is also reportedly planning to deepen personalisation. According to the tech publication, the company aims to introduce broader “Personal Intelligence” features for free users in the future. These tools are expected to connect with first-party apps such as Gmail, Google Photos, and others to offer more context-aware and relevant responses.
