Google Brings Read Aloud Feature to Pixel Screenshots App

Google is expanding the capabilities of its Pixel Screenshots app with a new “Read Aloud” option, first introduced on the Pixel 10 series and now gradually rolling out to Pixel 9 devices through the latest update. The feature is designed to enhance accessibility by turning text from screenshots into spoken audio, making saved articles and captured content easier to follow.

How it works When a user takes a screenshot of an article, a “Read Aloud” button appears. Tapping it opens a full-screen player that reads the article text aloud while highlighting each line in sync with the narration. The app automatically stores the article’s URL at the time of capture, ensuring that playback stays linked to the original source.

The player provides controls such as play, pause, skip forward or backward by line, along with a thumbs up or down rating option. Users can adjust the reading speed from 0.5x to 2x and choose from multiple languages including Hindi, English, Japanese, French, Arabic, Spanish, and more than 20 others. Playback continues even in the background or when the screen is switched off.

Other updates Alongside Read Aloud, the latest version (1.25.242.10) introduces subtle design changes under Google’s Material 3 Expressive style. The floating action button on the homepage has been redesigned into a rounded square, though the overall look of the app remains largely unchanged.

Availability The Read Aloud feature is live on Pixel 10 phones and will soon reach Pixel 9 devices via a software update. These devices are also receiving NotebookLM integration, which brings contextual content linked directly to screenshots.
