Google prepares to launch Nano Banana 2 Flash AI model

Google is reportedly close to launching its Nano Banana 2 Flash artificial intelligence model. This version is expected to replace the current Flash model used for image generation and editing. Like the previous Flash models created by the company, this version is designed to deliver faster outputs and reduce data processing costs. While the exact release date is not known, early indications suggest that this model may be available to free tier users, as there is no Pro version linked to it.

According to a report by a common publication, Google is finalising the Nano Banana 2 Flash model for rollout. The publication found code references inside the Gemini app that pointed to the model. The earlier Nano Banana Pro model was said to be internally called “Ketchup.” A new reference labelled “Mayo” has now appeared, which is believed to be connected to Nano Banana 2 Flash. Some users on social media have also claimed that they already have early access to this model.

Information about the large language model remains limited. However, based on the capabilities of its predecessor, Nano Banana 2 Flash is expected to offer very fast generation speeds, even if it sacrifices some accuracy. It is also said to require less processing power, which can help lower costs for Google and developers who rely on the application programming interface. These improvements could finally allow free tier users, who currently do not have access to Nano Banana Pro, to use the Flash version of the image generation model.

Users of NotebookLM’s free version may also benefit. At present, the image style generation feature is only available to those with Google AI Pro. With the new Flash model, this feature may become accessible to more users, although some usage limits are expected.

Several people on X have posted images that they say were created using the Nano Banana 2 Flash model. Google is reportedly testing the model with a small group of early testers. Based on these shared images, the quality difference between the Pro and Flash versions does not appear to be large.
