Google Pixel 9 series may soon support AirDrop file sharing through Quick Share

The Google Pixel 9 series may soon get support for Apple AirDrop through Quick Share, making it easier for Android and iPhone users to share files wirelessly. A recent report suggests that Google is working on expanding this feature beyond its newest devices.

In November, the tech company announced that Android users could securely send files to iPhone users using Quick Share and AirDrop. However, this feature was limited to the Pixel 10 series at the time. Now, new findings indicate that Google is preparing to bring this capability to older devices, starting with the Pixel 9 lineup.

According to the report, new system files spotted in the latest Android Canary build appear to support file transfers from iPhones to Pixel 9 models. These files were not present in earlier software versions for the same devices. The feature has not yet been tested, so it is unclear if it is fully functional.

The report also notes that these new files were only seen on the Pixel 9 series and not on older models such as the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. The Pixel 9a may also miss out on this update.

When Google first announced cross platform sharing, it confirmed that support would expand to more Android devices over time, though no clear timeline was shared.

The feature uses a peer to peer connection and works with iPhone, iPadOS, and macOS devices. It relies on the Everyone for 10 minutes mode in AirDrop. Google has said that the data is not routed through any server and the shared content is never logged.

If these early signs are accurate, an official rollout for Pixel 9 users could happen soon.
