Google Photos may soon allow users to create AI generated memes

Google is continuing to improve Google Photos, the default gallery app on most Android devices. A new update suggests that the company is working on an AI feature that can turn regular photos into memes.

As reported by a tech publication, version 7.51.0 of Google Photos contains a new option called “Me Meme”. It may later be renamed “Meme me”. This feature is expected to let users convert images of themselves or their friends into popular meme formats.

The report says Me Meme could offer several meme templates. Users may be able to generate personalised memes by selecting a photo that clearly shows a face. Since the feature may use generative AI, the chosen photo will need to be backed up on Google Photos first.

So far, the feature has not been released. There is also no confirmation about how many templates will be available apart from the well known “This is fine” meme. It is also unclear if users will be able to add their own meme templates or if access will remain limited to preset ones.

The company is also working on an AI powered meme creator for its keyboard app, but that feature has not yet launched publicly.

Last month, Google introduced a new Gemini AI editing tool for Google Photos. It allows users to edit images using natural language instead of selecting tools or adjusting sliders manually. The upcoming Me Meme feature appears to be another step toward making photo editing more creative and playful for users.
