Google Photos backups are known to consume a lot of battery, especially since users cannot schedule when they run. This may soon change. A recent APK teardown of the Google Photos app suggests that Google is working on a new feature designed to reduce battery drain by limiting how often backups run in the background.
According to a report, the upcoming feature could help users save power during everyday use. It may also restrict background syncing when the app is not actively being used.
New battery friendly option spotted in development
During an APK teardown of Google Photos version 7.59, a tech publication found signs of a new battery saving option that is currently under development. The new setting is reportedly called “Optimize backup for battery life.”
When this option is turned on, Google Photos is expected to limit how often it runs in the background. This could lower battery usage by reducing frequent background syncing.
A screenshot shared by the publication shows the description “your device may back up less often when you are not using the app” below the toggle. This suggests that photos and videos may only sync when the app is opened, instead of uploading constantly in the background.
Once this feature is rolled out, new photos and videos taken during the day may not appear instantly on other linked devices or on the web. However, users could benefit from longer battery life.
This option could be especially useful for people who travel often or spend a lot of time outdoors, where saving battery power is important. It is not yet clear when or if Google plans to release this feature in the stable public version of the app.
Recent updates to Google Photos
Google Photos has received several updates in recent months. It recently introduced a redesigned video editor and new video templates for both Android and iOS users. These tools allow users to add custom text and soundtracks to their videos.
In November last year, the app also received new artificial intelligence tools and an image editing feature powered by Nano Banana, added through a new “Help me edit” button.
