Google Meet Introduces Ask Gemini AI to Summarise and Streamline Meetings

Google is bringing its Gemini AI assistant to Google Meet, introducing powerful new features designed to make meetings more productive. The new Ask Gemini in Meet tool will help users summarise discussions, catch up on missed conversations, identify action items, and review key decisions, provided the “Take Notes for Me” option is enabled.

According to the company, Ask Gemini will generate responses based on meeting captions, Google Workspace content such as Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Gmail, as well as information from Google Search and public websites. Importantly, Google stated that all interactions remain private, with no meeting data or captions stored once the session ends. However, Gemini cannot answer questions about conversations that took place before a participant joined, unless note-taking was already enabled.

At present, the tool supports only English, works on desktop, and is not available in breakout rooms. Google also advised users to review Gemini’s outputs carefully, as the tool may sometimes produce errors, including details about people.

Controls for admins, hosts, and participants

  • Admins: Ask Gemini will be switched on by default, but they can manage access for the entire organisation, specific groups, or teams via the Admin console.

  • Hosts and co-hosts: Meeting organisers can disable Ask Gemini for everyone either from the Calendar invite, during the meeting through the Gemini icon and menu, or using Host controls.

  • Participants: All participants will receive a consent message when Ask Gemini is active. Those joining by dial-in will hear an audio notification. Users with Smart Features turned off will not be able to access Gemini.

Availability
The rollout began on 29 September 2025 for Rapid Release domains. Scheduled Release domains will begin receiving the update in October, with completion expected by 17 October. Currently, Ask Gemini in Meet is available for Google Workspace Business Plus customers. It will expand to Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, and other Workspace plans in late 2025 or early 2026 based on feedback.
