Google May Soon Allow Android Users to Share Earthquake Alerts With iPhone Users

Google is reportedly working on a new feature that will allow Android users to share earthquake alerts with iPhone users. The feature aims to make the company’s Android Earthquake Alerts System more collaborative by enabling users to forward real-time warnings to people on other platforms, helping spread vital information faster during seismic events.

According to a report, an APK teardown of Google Play Services version 25.40.30 revealed code indicating that users might soon see a share option when an earthquake alert appears on their screens. The shared notification could include the hashtag #AndroidEarthquakeAlerts, allowing users to forward it through messaging apps or social media platforms. This enhancement is expected to make it easier for Android users to alert iPhone users and others nearby when tremors are detected.

The Android Earthquake Alerts System (AEAS) was first launched in 2020 and later expanded to India in 2023. It uses the accelerometers built into Android smartphones to detect vibrations that may indicate an earthquake. Once detected, the system analyses crowdsourced data from multiple devices to confirm if seismic activity is taking place. Though not perfect, AEAS has been credited with providing early warnings that help people take precautionary measures before strong tremors begin.

When an earthquake occurs, Android devices can display two types of notifications. The “Be Aware” alert appears for mild or weak shaking, while the “Take Action” alert is triggered during moderate to strong tremors and includes safety guidance. The latter alert overrides the device’s Do Not Disturb mode, activates the screen, and plays a loud sound to ensure users are immediately notified. After the shaking stops, users can tap “Next Step” to view recommended safety actions.

The report also suggests that Google is testing additional upgrades within the Gemini overlay, potentially adding a Tools icon to provide quicker access to AI-powered features like Veo video tools and image generation. However, since APK teardowns are based on unfinished code, it remains uncertain when or if these features will become publicly available.
