Google may add 3D ‘Avatar’ feature in Gemini for faster AI content creation

In a move that highlights growing focus on personalised AI tools, Google is reportedly working on a new feature that will allow users to create a 3D avatar of themselves for quicker content generation.

The feature, called Avatar, is currently under development and is not available to users, including beta testers. It is said to be based on the same technology as Android XR’s Likeness capability, which was introduced at The Android Show in December 2025.

According to a report by Android Authority, evidence of the feature was found during an APK teardown of the Google for Android app, version 17.11.54.sa.arm64. The feature exists within the app’s code but has not been activated yet, as it requires server-side support.

Screenshots shared in the report show an introduction page, a feature description, and step-by-step guidance on creating an Avatar. While the description appears similar to the Likeness feature designed for digital avatars in video calls, the purpose of Avatar seems different.

Instead of just enhancing virtual meetings, the new feature is expected to help users generate content faster. A line of code reportedly states, “Add yourself to any frame you create by typing @me or @%s into your prompt.”

This suggests that users will not need to upload a selfie every time they want to generate AI images of themselves. Instead, the Avatar data can be reused to create consistent visuals, including images generated using Nano Banana technology.

It remains unclear whether this feature will also support AI video creation through Veo AI models.
