Google Maps may introduce ‘Ask Maps’ AI chat feature powered by Gemini

Google Maps could soon evolve beyond navigation and search, as reports suggest the platform is testing a new artificial intelligence feature that enables users to chat about places and routes. The upcoming tool, reportedly called “Ask Maps,” is expected to bring a Gemini-style conversational interface directly into the app.

According to a report, the feature was discovered during an APK teardown of Google Maps v26.07.01.867227976. It is currently under development and is not accessible to users, including beta testers.

Once rolled out, a new chip is expected to appear below the text box in the app. Screenshots shared in the report show the chip carrying the Gemini sparkle logo alongside the label “Ask Maps.” Tapping it reportedly opens a bottom sheet with a chat interface similar to Gemini, complete with a text box for user queries.

Through this interface, users may be able to ask questions related to locations, routes, listings, and other searchable elements within Google Maps. The AI model is expected to be closely integrated with the Maps database to deliver more relevant and app-specific responses.

The report also claims that the feature could initially be introduced as an experimental option. A new section titled “Try new features” has reportedly been spotted in the app’s menu, described as “Get a first look at new features as they roll out.” During testing, Ask Maps was activated through this section.

Additionally, a banner found in the code reads, “Spots are full right now, but more are opening soon. Check back later.” This suggests that the feature may first be released to a limited group of users.

However, since the details are based on an APK teardown, there is no guarantee the feature will be launched publicly. Sometimes planned features are removed before release, or significantly changed. Users are advised to wait for an official announcement before drawing conclusions.
