Google Maps Go receives new gradient icon redesign

A visual update has arrived for Google Maps Go, bringing a redesigned gradient app icon that aligns with the look of the main Google Maps application.

Google Maps Go is a lightweight version of the Maps experience designed for low-power Android smartphones. The app acts as a browser-based wrapper that delivers basic navigation and location features while using less storage and system resources. It is primarily aimed at older phones or entry-level devices where performance and storage capacity may be limited.

Although the app offers fewer features compared with the full version of Google Maps, it still provides many essential tools such as location search, directions and map browsing. Because it requires less storage, works better on slower networks and uses fewer system resources, it remains useful for devices with limited hardware capabilities.

Lightweight applications like this are often updated less frequently. However, Google Maps Go has now received the new gradient icon redesign, which is currently rolling out.

The updated icon closely resembles the standard Google Maps icon but includes a “GO” label along with a subtle drop-shadow arc. This design element helps users clearly distinguish the lightweight app from the main version when viewing icons on the home screen or in the app drawer.

Interestingly, the change only affects the app icon and not the application itself. Google Maps Go functions as a progressive web application, meaning it relies on web-based functionality rather than frequent updates through app stores.

The last major update for Google Maps Go was released in October 2023, more than 2 years ago. Because of its web-based nature, users can also access the same experience directly through a browser. However, installing the app still provides certain convenience benefits.

With the new icon, the branding now appears consistent across different versions of Google Maps, helping maintain a unified visual identity for users regardless of which version of the app they use.
