A growing demand for applied artificial intelligence skills is shaping new learning pathways, as Google introduces a structured program focused on everyday, job-ready use cases rather than theory alone.
Google has launched its AI Professional Certificate on Coursera. The program is designed to help learners use AI for real-world tasks such as communication, research, data analysis, content creation, planning, and basic coding. The course places a strong focus on practical projects, allowing participants to demonstrate applied skills.
Program structure and hands-on learning
The certificate includes 7 short courses with a combined duration of about 10 hours, along with a capstone project. Learners will complete more than 20 hands-on activities aimed at building a work-ready portfolio. These projects include outputs such as project plans and marketing videos, all created using natural language prompts, with no prior coding experience required.
Upon enrollment, learners receive 3 months of free access to Google AI Pro tools, including Gemini and NotebookLM, giving them exposure to tools commonly used in professional settings.
Pricing and enterprise adoption
On Coursera in the US and Canada, the AI Professional Certificate is priced at $49 per month. Major companies such as Walmart and Verizon are set to use the program for employee training.
Small businesses in the US will receive free access to the certificate, along with 3 months of Google Workspace Business Standard. Google said this move is aimed at helping smaller teams adopt AI tools more effectively.
According to the company, more than 1 million learners have completed Google’s career certificate programs so far. Around 70% of participants reported positive career outcomes within 6 months of completion.
With this new AI-focused certificate, Google is positioning the program as a practical entry point for individuals and organizations looking to build AI skills that can be applied immediately at work.
