Google has launched a new feature called Guided Learning in its Gemini AI chatbot, designed to act as an intelligent tutor and compete with OpenAI’s recently introduced Study Mode in ChatGPT. The feature aims to help students gain a deeper understanding of subjects rather than simply receiving direct answers.
“Whether you are preparing for an exam about enzymes or exploring your passion for photography, Guided Learning is a collaborative thinking partner that helps you get it the way each step of,” said Maureen Heymans, Google’s Vice President of Learning and Sustainability.
Google Guided Learning works by encouraging active participation through open-ended and thought-provoking questions that promote discussion and deeper exploration of a topic. Its goal is to build strong conceptual knowledge instead of enabling quick answer-seeking habits.
The feature offers step-by-step explanations tailored to each learner’s needs, using various tools such as images, diagrams, and YouTube videos for visual support, interactive quizzes and flashcards to test understanding, and real-world examples with probing questions to enhance critical thinking. It is powered by LearnLM, a family of models based on educational research and developed in collaboration with teachers, students, and cognitive scientists.
While OpenAI’s Study Mode takes a Socratic approach by guiding learners through adaptive dialogue and reflective questions, Google’s Guided Learning is more structured and visually driven, resembling an interactive digital textbook. Both aim to address concerns about students relying on AI as a shortcut for homework by promoting genuine learning.
To encourage adoption, Google is offering students in the United States, Japan, Indonesia, Korea, and Brazil a free one-year subscription to its AI Pro plan, which includes access to Gemini 2.5 Pro, NotebookLM, Veo 3, and more. The company has also committed $1 billion over three years to advance AI-powered education tools.
