Google introduces AI agent in Opal to power automated workflows

Google on Tuesday unveiled a new feature for its vibe-coding platform Opal, enabling users to build automated workflows through a newly introduced AI agent. The update allows users to create mini-apps that can plan and execute tasks using simple text prompts.

The new agent runs on the Gemini 3 Flash model and can automatically select the right tools to complete tasks. For example, it can use Google Sheets to store and manage memory across sessions, such as maintaining a shopping list within an e-commerce app. The agent independently plans and determines the next steps required to complete a task.

According to Google, these agents are designed to be natively interactive. If additional input is required, the agent will prompt users for more information or present options to guide the next action. The company says this enhancement enables users without technical expertise to design and manage complex workflows within their apps.

Opal was initially launched for users in the U.S. in July 2025, offering tools to create mini web apps or remix existing ones. In October 2025, Google expanded access to 15 more countries, including Canada, India, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia, Brazil, and Singapore. By November 2025, Opal became available in over 160 countries. In December, the company integrated Opal into the Gemini web app, allowing users to build custom apps through a visual editor without writing code.

Google’s move comes amid growing competition in the natural language app-building space. Startups such as Lovable and Replit have gained traction, while newer players including Wabi, backed by a former Replika founder, SoftBank and Lightspeed-backed Emergent, and Accel-backed Rocket.new are also expanding their presence.
