Google has introduced new generative AI features across Google Photos and YouTube, expanding its Photo-to-Video capability powered by the advanced video generation model, Veo 2. This tool, which lets users create short videos from still photos, was first launched in Gemini and can now be accessed by users on both Android and iOS platforms in the US.
With this update, Google Photos now allows users to turn static images into 6-second video clips complete with subtle motion and sound. To use the feature, users need to upload a photo from their gallery and choose between two prompts: “Subtle movements” or “I’m feeling lucky.” The result is a short animated video that can be saved or shared.
Along with this, Google Photos is introducing a new “Remix” feature, which lets users reimagine their photos in various styles such as sketches, comics, anime, and 3D animation. Users can simply select a picture and apply a style of their choice. This feature will be available in the US starting next week.
To make these tools easier to find, Google Photos is also adding a new “Create” tab. This section will bring together all creative features like Photo-to-Video, Remix, collages, highlight videos, and other editing tools in one place. The Create tab is expected to roll out next month.
YouTube is also joining in with its own set of generative AI tools. The Photo-to-Video feature is being added to YouTube Shorts, allowing users to animate landscape, portrait, and group photos. According to the company, “with Photo to video you can add movement to landscape photos, animate pictures of everyday photos, or bring group photos to life.” This tool is currently rolling out to users in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, with more regions to follow soon.
In addition to animated photo videos, YouTube is introducing a range of generative effects. These tools allow users to turn simple doodles into lifelike images or add entertaining visual effects to videos, such as swimming underwater or twinning with a digital sibling.
YouTube’s AI playground is also getting an upgrade with a suite of generative AI creation tools. Here, users will be able to create videos, images, music, and more using AI. This feature is also launching across the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
These updates reflect Google’s ongoing efforts to enhance user creativity with the help of AI, making content creation more fun, accessible, and imaginative across its platforms.
