In a major update, a leading tech company has introduced a long-awaited feature that allows users to change their primary Gmail address, something that was not possible earlier.
The new functionality applies across the entire Google Account, including services like Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Photos, and Google Drive. However, the rollout has currently started only for users in the US.
The company had first hinted at this feature in December 2025 through an update on its support page, but it had not been made available until now.
With this update, users can switch to a new @gmail.com address while still receiving emails sent to their old address. The previous email ID will continue to work for signing in and sending messages. Users can make this change once per year, with a maximum limit of 3 changes. All emails, data, and account history will remain unchanged during the transition.
The company also confirmed that users can revert to their previous email address if needed. Once a new address is selected, the old one will function as an alias. Contacts, files, emails, photos, purchases, and subscriptions will remain intact. Access to services like Gmail, Drive, YouTube, and Maps will not be affected.
This feature is expected to benefit long-time users who want to update older or less professional email IDs. Until now, users could only create aliases or additional accounts, but not change the main email address.
How to change your Gmail address:
- On Android or iOS, go to myaccount.google.com/google-account-email and sign in
- Tap “Personal info” at the top
- Select “Email” and then “Google Account email”
- Tap “Change Google Account email”
- Enter a new username (must be available and not previously deleted)
- Tap “Change email” and confirm with “Yes, change email”
- Follow the steps to complete the process
Once completed, the new Gmail address becomes the primary email, while the old one remains as an alternate.
The company noted that some services like Chromebooks, Google Convenience sign-in, and Remote Desktop may require additional steps after switching, as detailed on its support page.
