Google Gemini Can Now Access WhatsApp Chats Unless You Change This Setting

Google has updated its Gemini AI assistant, allowing it to interact with apps like Phone, Messages and WhatsApp on Android devices, even if users have previously restricted access to their personal data. This new change came into effect on July 7, as informed by an email sent to several Android users last week.

In the email, Google stated that “Gemini will soon be able to help you use Phone, Messages, WhatsApp and Utilities on your phone” even if Gemini Apps Activity is turned off. Although the statement appears vague, it means that the AI assistant may now be able to access parts of your communication apps, including WhatsApp.

According to Google’s website, “Gemini apps give you direct access to Google AI” and “your chats are saved in your account for up to 72 hours, whether Gemini Apps Activity is on or off.” This indicates that user data, including potentially sensitive WhatsApp messages, could be temporarily stored by Google, even when Gemini activity tracking is disabled.

While this update can enhance the functionality of Gemini by enabling it to read and respond to messages, users concerned about privacy may find this move intrusive.

To disable Gemini Apps Activity entirely, open the Gemini app on your Android phone, tap your profile picture in the top right corner, then select “Gemini Apps Activity.” You will find a toggle that allows you to turn off this feature.

However, Google still keeps your data for up to 72 hours after disabling it, which the company says is to “maintain safety and security of Gemini apps.”

If you prefer to limit Gemini’s access to specific apps, go to the same profile menu in the Gemini app and tap on “Apps.” From there, you can choose which apps Gemini can connect to. For complete restriction, users also have the option to disable the Gemini app entirely from their phone.
