Google has introduced a new feature in its Gemini AI platform, allowing users to share custom Gems, the AI assistants designed for specific tasks, with others. The update makes it easier to distribute personalised AI helpers to colleagues, friends, or family, similar to sharing files on Google Drive. Sharing Gems also reduces repeated prompts and enhances productivity.
According to Google, “Whether you have crafted a detailed vacation guide for your family, a story-writing partner for your creative team or a personalised meal planner for a friend, sharing your Gems makes collaboration easier.”
How Gem Sharing Works
With this update, users can share their Gem creations via the web app’s Gem manager. Creators can select the “Share” option next to a Gem and control who can view, use, or edit it. This feature ensures broader access and avoids duplicate work.
For example, a single shared Gem can serve an entire team, reducing the need for multiple co-workers to create similar assistants. Families planning trips or individuals working on collaborative projects can also benefit. Google highlights that the feature is ideal for meal planning, guides, and other recurring collaborative tasks.
Gems were first launched last year with Gemini Advanced, allowing users to create AI experts with specific instructions. Google offered ready-made Gems such as a brainstorming partner, learning coach, career advisor, writing editor, and coding assistant. Initially exclusive to Gemini Advanced subscribers, Gems later expanded to Gemini Business and Enterprise users in over 150 countries. In March, Gems became accessible to all users, with support for uploading files to enhance customisation.
Creating and Sharing Gems
To create a Gem, visit the Google Gemini website and log in with your Google Account. In the Gem manager, select “create new Gem,” provide a name and instructions in the Editor section, and click “Save.” Users can also preview how the Gem responds to prompts. Once created, Gems can be shared easily with others to streamline collaboration.
