In a significant push toward personalized AI experiences, Google has expanded its Personal Intelligence feature beyond beta, making it available across multiple platforms in the U.S.
The feature is now integrated into AI Mode in Search, the Gemini app, and Gemini in Google Chrome, marking a broader consumer rollout.
Why it matters
Personal Intelligence strengthens Google’s move toward highly personalized search. It uses first-party data such as Gmail and Photos, making results more tailored—and harder to replicate, rank, or track. Outputs in AI Mode may differ based on user history, purchases, and behavior.
Where it is available
- AI Mode in Google Search (live in the U.S.)
- Gemini app (rolling out to free users)
- Gemini in Chrome (rolling out)
How it works
Users can connect apps like Gmail and Google Photos to enable context-aware responses. Based on this data, Google can deliver:
- Shopping suggestions aligned with past purchases and brand preferences
- Tech support using receipt data to identify devices
- Travel recommendations based on flight details and past trips
- Personalized itineraries and local suggestions
- Hobby ideas inferred from user interests
Access and rollout
The feature is currently limited to personal accounts and is not available for Workspace users. Google first introduced Personal Intelligence in January as a U.S.-only beta for Gemini subscribers. At that time:
- Access was limited to AI Pro and Ultra users
- It focused on Gemini, with Search integration planned later
- The feature was opt-in and disabled by default
The latest update expands this by bringing it to Google Search AI Mode, extending access to free users, and adding support within Chrome.
Privacy and control
Google highlighted that users remain in control:
- App connections require user opt-in
- Users can turn connections on or off anytime
- Models are not directly trained on Gmail or Photos content
Limited data, such as prompts and responses, may be used to improve systems
