Google has strengthened its AI footprint in Asia by opening its largest artificial intelligence infrastructure hardware engineering centre outside the United States. The new facility is located in Taiwan, a major global technology hub and home to leading chipmaker TSMC, whose components power the growth of companies advancing AI worldwide.
Aamer Mahmood, Google Cloud’s vice president of platforms infrastructure engineering, said the work done in Taipei supports the company’s global operations. He noted that “the technology developed and tested in Taipei is deployed in Google data centres around the world, which in turn power Google devices that billions of people rely on everyday.” He added that the new centre represents more than a physical workspace and reflects Google’s belief in Taiwan’s growing role in AI. “This is not just an investment in an office, it is an investment in an ecosystem and a testament to Taiwan’s place as an important centre for global AI innovation.”
Taiwan President Lai Ching-te welcomed the move and said Google’s continued expansion signals long term confidence in the island. He told attendees that “this also allows the world to see that Taiwan is not only a vital part of the global technological supply chain, but also a key hub for building secure and trustworthy AI.” Taiwan’s government has frequently urged caution over the use of Chinese developed AI tools such as DeepSeek, concerns that China has repeatedly rejected.
The launch also highlighted the strong ties between the United States and Taiwan. Raymond Greene, the de facto United States ambassador in Taipei, said the collaboration reflects a shared commitment to innovation. He stated that the two sides are entering “a new era of opportunity, a new golden age in United States Taiwan economic relations.”
