A sharper, more personal search experience is taking shape as Google enhances its conversational Search feature with deeper personalization.
The company announced that AI Mode is now gaining “Personal Intelligence,” allowing it to draw insights from Gmail and Google Photos to deliver tailored responses. AI Mode is designed for complex queries, and this update aims to make its answers more relevant to each user.
Personal Intelligence was first introduced last week in the Gemini app. The feature connects signals across the Google ecosystem, starting with Gmail, Photos, Search, and YouTube history, so the AI assistant can better understand user context.
The opt-in capability is now beginning to roll out to AI Mode for Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers. It is currently available in English in the U.S. Users can choose to turn Personal Intelligence on or off at any time.
By extending Personal Intelligence to both Gemini and AI Mode, Google is using the large volume of data already within its ecosystem to deliver experiences that feel more customized. Since many users already rely on Gmail and Photos daily, the company says it can offer a level of personalization that competitors may find hard to replicate.
“With Personal Intelligence, recommendations don’t just match your interests — they fit seamlessly into your life,” Robby Stein, VP of Product, Google Search, explained in a blog post. “You don’t have to constantly explain your preferences or existing plans, it selects recommendations just for you, right from the start.”
For example, when planning a family vacation, AI Mode can use hotel confirmations from Gmail and past travel memories from Google Photos to suggest activities and restaurants suited to everyone. This could include recommendations like an old-style ice cream parlor, based on frequent ice cream photos in a user’s library.
Google says AI Mode avoids generic suggestions and instead offers a personalized starting point. “Personal Intelligence can also be particularly helpful for shopping, because AI Mode considers the types of items you buy and where you shop,” Stein wrote.
The company added that AI Mode does not train directly on Gmail inboxes or Google Photos libraries. It only trains on specific prompts and the AI’s responses.
