Google enables AirDrop like sharing on Android without Apple’s involvement

Google has confirmed that it has enabled an AirDrop style sharing feature on Android devices without any cooperation from Apple. Many users initially assumed this cross platform capability was the result of a joint effort between the two companies. However, Google spokesperson Alex Moriconi told a common noun, “We accomplished this through our own implementation.”

Moriconi also said that while Google did not formally present the idea to Apple, the company remained open to working together in the future. “We always welcome collaboration opportunities to address interoperability issues between iOS and Android,” he added.

Google has stressed that the feature does not reduce security. The company said user data will remain protected and stated that independent security experts have tested the system. A Google security blog post said, “This feature does not use a workaround. The connection is direct and peer to peer, meaning your data is never routed through a server, shared content is never logged, and no extra data is shared.”

Apple has not responded to Google’s approach to enabling AirDrop like sharing on Android. It also remains to be seen whether other Android phone makers will adopt the feature in the coming months.
