A group of Google employees has developed a crowdsourced internal document to track the company’s recent job cuts, which have impacted teams across various departments such as Cloud, advertising, and Trust & Safety.
This shared spreadsheet, built from internal communications and employee testimonies, has become an essential tool for workers to stay informed about the layoffs and their scope. According to a review of the document by Business Insider, fewer than 200 positions have been affected in total.
The tracker lists several teams that were informed of layoffs this week, including the Americas Large Customer Sales group in Google’s advertising team, which serves major clients. Though specific numbers are not provided for most teams, the document confirms that at least 25 people were let go from the Bard EngProd team, which worked on the AI product now known as Gemini.
The internal document also highlights cuts within Google Cloud divisions such as the Threat Intelligence Group, Scaled Customer Engineering, Google Cloud Platform Support, Go-To-Market, and Looker teams.
This is not the first instance of Google employees using shared documents to track workplace changes. As Business Insider points out, Googlers have previously created spreadsheets to monitor salary data across different roles and locations. The practice has expanded beyond Google, with employees at other tech giants like Amazon creating similar tools to track layoffs.
Employees suggest that these recent cuts are part of Google’s ongoing effort to streamline operations, making smaller, targeted reductions rather than large-scale layoffs like those in January 2023. A Google spokesperson confirmed that the company is undergoing changes “to operate more efficiently, remove layers, and ensure they are set up for long-term success.”
