Google Cloud CEO says AI is helping workers, not replacing them

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian has assured workers that artificial intelligence is not here to take their jobs. In a recent interview with a technology publication, Kurian said AI is meant to support employees, helping them manage growing demands and ambitions rather than replace them.

Kurian explained that AI’s current role is to bridge the gap between human capability and potential. Highlighting Google’s Customer Engagement Suite, an AI-powered platform that assists service teams, he noted that none of their clients have used it to reduce staff. Instead, the platform helps customers get faster answers to questions they might not have asked otherwise.

“When we first introduced it, people asked, ‘Does this mean we won’t need agents anymore?’ But almost none of our clients have let anyone go,” Kurian said.

Having spent more than 20 years at Oracle before joining Google, Kurian is among several tech leaders adopting a more optimistic view of AI. Google CEO Sundar Pichai has similarly stated that AI has made Google engineers 10 percent more productive, enabling them to focus on creative and meaningful work.

Both Kurian and Pichai see AI as a tool that accelerates productivity without displacing employees. Kurian emphasised that the technology is designed to help people “keep up” in a fast-changing world, not push them out of it.

With AI increasingly shaping the workplace, these leaders stress that its primary purpose is to support human talent, enhance efficiency, and enable workers to achieve more, rather than replace them.
