Google Chrome rolls out split view and new productivity tools for desktop users

In a move aimed at improving workflow and multitasking, Google has introduced a fresh set of productivity features for its Chrome browser. The Mountain View-based technology company said the updates are designed to help both individual and enterprise users manage tabs better and complete tasks more efficiently. The latest version brings Split View, built-in PDF annotation tools and a direct Save to Google Drive option.

One of the key additions is Split View, a feature that allows users to open 2 tabs side by side within a single Chrome window. Instead of manually resizing multiple browser windows, users can right-click on a tab and choose the Split View option to pair it with another open tab. Chrome will automatically arrange both pages evenly across the screen. According to the company, this feature makes it easier to compare documents, reference notes while drafting content, or work across multiple web apps at the same time. The feature had been under testing for the past few months and was accessible to some users before its official rollout.

Google has also enhanced Chrome’s built-in PDF viewer by adding annotation tools. Users can now highlight text, draw, add comments and make basic markups directly within a PDF file opened in the browser. An annotation toolbar will appear when a PDF is opened, allowing edits without downloading the document. This update simplifies document review and collaboration by keeping tasks within the browser environment.

Another new addition is the Save to Google Drive feature. It allows users to store files and PDFs directly to their linked Google Drive account from Chrome in just a few clicks. Files are saved to a dedicated “Save from Chrome” folder in Drive, making them accessible across devices while reducing the need for local storage. Google said these features are rolling out with the latest desktop version of Chrome and may take time to reach all users as part of a phased release.
