Google Beam Revolutionizes 3D Video Communication with AI-Powered Features

Google has revealed a rebranded version of Project Starline, now called Beam, during its Google I/O 2025 event.

This new AI-powered 3D video communication platform aims to enhance video interactions significantly. Alongside Beam, Google is also upgrading its AI tool, Gemini, into a more robust AI operating system, incorporating features like Gemini Live, Imagen 4, Veo3, Deep Research, and Canvas.

As stated in a Google blog post, Beam transforms traditional 2D video into immersive 3D visuals using multiple webcam arrays to capture images from different angles, merging these streams to create a 3D light field display. Google claims that Beam offers precise head tracking and can render 3D video at 60 frames per second (fps).

The platform includes an AI volumetric video model that enhances the 3D experience within 2D streams, allowing users to perceive depth, maintain eye contact, and pick up on subtle cues during conversations.

This cutting-edge platform replaces Project Starline, which was first introduced at Google I/O 2021, fulfilling its original vision of a natural-scale 3D video communication solution. Furthermore, Google is integrating real-time speech translation into Beam, making it available for Google Meet users starting today.

The company is also partnering with HP to develop a device featuring Google Beam, expected to launch later this year, with announcements planned for InfoComm 2025 next month.
