Google has shared latest updates on its upcoming AI powered glasses, outlining its plan to enter the growing consumer market for AI wearables as competition with Meta continues to intensify. The company confirmed that the first models developed through its partnership with Warby Parker are scheduled to arrive in 2026.
The tech giant is working with Samsung, Gentle Monster and Warby Parker after committing USD 150 million to the eyewear brand earlier this year. Google said it will introduce audio only glasses that let users interact with the Gemini assistant through voice. It is also developing glasses with an in lens display that can show information including navigation guidance and language translation. Google indicated that the first versions of these display enabled glasses will roll out next year, although it has not specified which models will debut.
According to a Monday filing, Warby Parker expects its first collaborative glasses with Google to release in 2026. All devices will run on Android XR, the operating system that powers Google’s headset platform. Google signalled a renewed push into smart glasses earlier this year, with Co-Founder Sergey Brin noting past challenges such as earlier AI limitations and limited supply chain experience that contributed to high pricing. He added that “now, in the AI world, the things these glasses can do to help you out without constantly distracting you that capability is much higher.”
The AI wearables segment has been gaining momentum with Meta leading recent adoption through its popular Ray Ban Meta glasses created with EssilorLuxottica. Meta also launched a display model in September that shows messages, photo previews and live captions through a small lens display. Companies like Snap and Alibaba have been expanding their own offerings as well. Alongside the glasses update, Google also announced new software improvements for the Galaxy XR headset, including Windows PC connectivity and a travel mode for use in planes and cars.
