Google and Samsung push ahead with agentic AI as Gemini gains real-world task capabilities

A major shift in smartphone AI is taking shape as Google introduces new Gemini features designed to complete multi-step tasks directly on mobile devices. The capabilities are expected to debut first on the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and the newly announced Samsung Galaxy S26 series, signalling a move beyond chat-based assistants toward action-driven AI experiences.

During an onstage presentation, Sameer Samat, President of Android at Google, demonstrated how Gemini’s agentic AI can manage everyday tasks. In a prerecorded demo, Gemini reviewed a busy family group chat, identified food preferences, and prepared a pizza order through a delivery app. After analysing the conversation, the assistant displayed order details and, following a voice command, proceeded to place the order through Grubhub before notifying the user for final approval.

The feature highlights Google’s broader ambition to position Gemini as a productivity partner rather than just a chatbot. The company recently introduced auto-browsing capabilities in Chrome, and integrating similar functionality directly into Android represents the next step in that strategy.

The development also draws comparisons with features previously showcased by Apple for Siri at its 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference. Apple had demonstrated AI abilities such as understanding on-screen content, taking actions across apps, and using personal context to answer queries. However, those features were delayed in March 2025 and remain unavailable, with reports suggesting some capabilities may not arrive until iOS 27.

Despite the announcement, questions remain around Gemini’s real-world performance. Google has labelled the rollout a “beta,” indicating potential limitations during early use. Another uncertainty is whether app developers will allow Gemini to interact fully within their platforms, as the company confirmed support will initially be limited to “select rideshare and food apps.”

Even so, the launch positions Google and Samsung ahead in bringing agentic AI to smartphones, increasing pressure on competitors to deliver similar capabilities.
