Google has updated its AI Mode to include visual search results alongside text-based responses, allowing users to explore ideas and products they cannot easily describe in words. The new feature enables users to refine searches through prompts or follow-up questions about what they see on their screen.
With the visual results feature, users can ask questions conversationally and receive a variety of images alongside traditional text results. For instance, a search for “maximalist design inspiration for your bedroom” will generate images matching the desired style, each linked for further exploration. Users can refine results with natural language requests, such as asking for darker tones or bolder patterns.
The update also enhances shopping experiences. Instead of manually filtering products, users can now use AI Mode to find options directly based on visual cues. A search like “barrel jeans that aren’t too baggy” will show relevant images, which can be further refined for fit, style, or colour.
AI Mode’s visual search is powered by the Gemini 2.5 large language model and integrates Google Search, Lens, and Image search features. It can analyse subtle details in images, recognise secondary objects, and break queries into subtopics to deliver highly accurate results. This multimodal approach allows for both text and image prompts, enabling a deeper understanding of user queries.
The visual exploration capabilities are rolling out in English for users in the United States this week. AI Mode is accessible on the Google website, through the Google app, or via Google Lens, which can redirect photos into AI Mode for comprehensive visual search results.
This update marks a significant step in combining AI language models with visual search, offering users a more intuitive and efficient way to explore ideas, inspiration, and products online.
