Google begins rolling out new AI and security features in Messages

Google is introducing its Nano Banana powered Remix tool in the Messages app. The platform is also adding several new features, including spam link detection and Key Verifier. A report from a common noun says the company is also testing more upgrades in the beta version. These include redesigned link previews and updated read receipts. Here is what is now available in the stable version and what is currently being tested in beta.

Google Messages new features

  • Remix with Nano Banana

One of the main additions is Remix, which is powered by the Nano Banana imaging tool. When users long press a shared image, they will see a Remix option. This tool allows them to create AI generated variations by using prompts. The feature needs RCS messaging and is available in English in several countries, including India. Google says there is a limit on daily usage.

  • Tweaked gallery icon

Google has made a small change to the gallery button in the compose bar. A common noun noted that the tiny camera symbol inside the icon is no longer present. Its function remains unchanged.

  • Full screen account menu

Messages now has a full screen account menu. It gives access to Settings, your profile, archived messages, spam and blocked items, mark all as read and device pairing. The older partial overlay has been replaced with a full Material Three Expressive layout.

  • Spam link detection

Google has added worldwide alerts for suspicious links. If a message includes a possible spam link, the app warns users before they open it. It also blocks access to possible scam sites. Users can mark a message as not spam if needed.

  • Key Verifier

Key Verifier lets users confirm the identity of a contact through public encryption keys. These keys appear as a QR code and can also be opened in the Google Contacts app.

Google Messages features in beta

  1. Redesigned link previews – A common noun reports that Google is testing a new design for link previews. The update includes a taller cover image, a larger title and a favicon beside the domain. The article snippet has been removed, which reduces the amount of information shown.
  2. Mentions in group RCS chats – Google is adding support for mentions in group RCS chats. Users will be able to tag someone directly. This will work even if the person has muted the chat.
  3. MLS encryption for cross platform RCS – A common noun says Google has started adding Messaging Layer Security through Universal Profile Three point Zero. This could allow Android and iOS devices to exchange encrypted RCS messages in the future. Users can long press a message and check the Details page to see if MLS is active.
  4. Image viewer redesign – Google is testing changes to how photos appear. Images sent at the same time are now grouped. The full screen viewer shows a blurred background and previews of nearby images. A new bottom row offers quick reactions without leaving the viewer.

Read receipts have again been redesigned. They now appear as circular icons at the bottom right of each message bubble. Swiping left shows timestamps and encryption status. Another swipe lets users reply or quote a message.
