Google has rolled out a new feature in Google Classroom aimed at engaging students who regularly listen to podcasts. Teachers can now create podcast style audio lessons using a Gemini powered tool designed to support deeper understanding of learning material.
Educators can access the feature by opening the Gemini tab within Google Classroom. From there, they can customise lessons by choosing the grade level, defining topics, and setting clear learning goals. Teachers can also personalise the audio format by selecting the number of speakers and choosing conversational styles such as interviews, roundtable discussions, or casual dialogues.
The new capability is available to users subscribed to Google Workspace Education Fundamentals, Standard, and Plus.
By using a familiar and popular format, Google aims to help teachers connect more effectively with students. Research shows that podcast listening is widespread among young audiences, with around 35 million Gen Z listeners tuning in monthly in the United States. Podcasts are also gaining traction as learning tools, with many universities producing their own series and students increasingly exploring educational podcasts independently.
Podcast based lessons may also support self paced learning, as students can replay episodes to revise concepts or catch up on missed classes.
At the same time, many educators continue to face challenges around the use of AI in classrooms. Teachers have raised concerns about students becoming overly dependent on generative AI tools such as ChatGPT for completing assignments.
Google has advised teachers to follow responsible AI practices. The company encourages educators to carefully review and, if required, edit AI generated content to ensure it is accurate, suitable for their classroom, and aligned with local policies.
Gemini for Classroom was first introduced in 2024. Since then, Google has continued to expand its features. In June, the company released major updates that help teachers brainstorm ideas, build lesson plans, and customise instructional content for students.
