Google has introduced new options in its AI powered note taking and research assistant NotebookLM that allow users to personalise the tone of their Audio Overviews. These Audio Overviews are AI generated podcasts where virtual hosts summarise and discuss documents that users upload, such as course material, research notes or legal briefs.
Users can now decide how they want their AI podcast to sound with four new formats called Deep Dive, Brief, Critique and Debate. A Deep Dive lets two AI hosts unpack the subject in detail through conversation and questions. A Brief is a short and simple version that captures the main points quickly. A Critique provides a review of the uploaded sources with helpful feedback for improvement, while a Debate allows two AI hosts to share opposing perspectives on the same material.
Each podcast format can also be adjusted for length so listeners can choose between a concise version or a longer and more detailed one. Along with the new styles Google is also introducing additional voice options for the AI podcasts, which has been one of the most requested features by users.
The update comes as part of a series of improvements to NotebookLM in recent months. Recently the platform launched Video Overviews, which turn complex material such as raw notes, PDFs and images into visual presentations. NotebookLM has also added featured notebooks created by authors, publications, researchers and nonprofits so that users can explore a wider variety of topics. In May standalone apps for NotebookLM became available for both Android and iOS devices.
Google has confirmed that the new podcast formats will be available in all languages and will roll out to all users this week.
