Goa Police & BITS Pilani Develop AI Tool ‘SpotTheScam’ to Combat Cyber Fraud

In response to the increasing incidents of cybercrime, the Goa police, in partnership with BITS Pilani’s Goa campus, have developed a digital tool to identify counterfeit websites for hotels, resorts, and other businesses. This innovative solution is intended to safeguard the public from online scams by allowing users to verify the legitimacy of websites prior to making any financial commitments.

Superintendent of Police (SP) of the crime branch, Rahul Gupta, stated that the tool will also detect fraudulent APK files being shared on platforms like Telegram and WhatsApp, which are often used to compromise the devices of unsuspecting individuals. “Goa Police, in collaboration with BITS Pilani, Goa campus, has created the tool ‘SpotTheScam’ to enhance cyber safety. The link to access this tool will be available on both the Goa Police website and the tourism site, enabling users to verify website authenticity,” Gupta explained.

He further noted that this system, powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), is specifically designed to address cyber fraud and protect women and children by identifying and categorizing deceptive websites, mobile applications, and APK files.

“The tool analyses domain information, SSL certificates, and employs natural language processing (NLP) and image recognition to screen online advertisements for suspicious content. It cross-references customer care details with a verified fraud database and enhances fraud detection capabilities through machine learning,” Gupta said.

“The tool is being used to identify fake websites that discreetly promote escort services in Goa and indecent representation of women. During the testing phase, more than 70 websites were listed as fake, and information was sent to DoT to block the same,” he said. Goa police will soon launch the tool, Gupta said.

Goa police, in partnership with BITS Pilani Goa, have created an innovative content analyzer designed to track both online and offline materials, including videos of up to 25 minutes in length. This collaboration positions Goa police as one of the few law enforcement agencies in India equipped to monitor radicalization content to combat extremist propaganda. They have tested over 170 videos sourced from various social media platforms and offline channels.

Additionally, Goa police have begun utilizing a range of electronic tools such as Cyber Yoddha, AI-ML Lab, QuickPass, TRACK (Traffic Response and Congestion Control Center), Radical Content Analyzer, Spot The Scam (for detecting fake websites and APK files), a tenant-servant verification app, a cloud-based 1930 cyber crime helpline, and QR code-based public feedback systems, among others, to enhance their engagement with the community and strengthen their operational efficiency.
