Gmail rolls out Gemini-powered AI features to simplify inbox management

As email overload continues to be a daily challenge, Google has announced a major AI-driven upgrade to Gmail, marking the start of what it calls the “Gemini era” for the platform.

Revealed on January 8, the update introduces a new set of features powered by Gemini 3. The rollout begins in the US from January 9, starting with English, with additional languages and regions planned in the coming phases.

A key highlight of the update is AI Overviews. This feature summarises long email threads and responds to user questions written in natural language by pulling together information from multiple emails. “Instead of hunting for keywords or digging through a year of emails, just use natural language,” said Blake Barnes, Vice President of product for Gmail. “Gemini’s advanced reasoning pulls the answer, instantly summarising the exact details you need.”

Conversation summaries will be available for free to users globally. However, the ability to ask questions directly within the inbox will be restricted to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

Google is also expanding its Gemini AI-assisted writing tools. Help Me Write and improved Suggested Replies are now being made available to all users. A new Proofread feature, however, will remain exclusive to paid plans. “Suggested Replies use the context of your conversation to offer relevant, one-click responses that match how you write,” Barnes said. He also noted that Help Me Write will receive deeper personalisation starting next month.

Another addition is AI Inbox, a new inbox view designed to surface priority emails, deadlines, and reminders. “AI Inbox is like having a personalised briefing, highlighting to-dos and catching you up on what matters,” Barnes said. He added that the analysis is carried out “securely with the privacy protections you expect from Google”.

With these updates, Gmail aims to make email management faster, smarter, and more intuitive by embedding Gemini AI directly into everyday workflows.
