GM and LG to Upgrade Tennessee Plant for Affordable EV Battery Production

Ultium Cells, the joint venture between General Motors (GM) and LG Energy Solution, announced plans to upgrade its battery manufacturing plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee. The move will focus on producing low-cost lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells for electric vehicles.

LFP batteries are more affordable because they do not use costly minerals like cobalt and nickel, which are common in traditional lithium-ion batteries. GM stated that these new batteries will help reduce costs and expand its electric vehicle lineup.

“This upgrade at Spring Hill will enable us to scale production of lower-cost LFP cell technologies in the U.S., complementing our high-nickel and future lithium manganese rich solutions and further diversifying our growing EV portfolio,” said Kurt Kelty, GM’s vice president of batteries, propulsion and sustainability.

GM currently offers 12 electric vehicles ranging in price from around $35,000 to over $300,000. The Spring Hill plant, which was originally announced in 2021 with a $2.3 billion investment from GM and LG, will begin commercial production of LFP cells by late 2027. While the companies confirmed the upgrade, they did not reveal any additional investment figures.

The announcement also follows GM’s efforts to develop new battery technology for its large electric SUVs and trucks. Battery chemistry plays a key role in vehicle performance, range, safety, and charging speed.

Separately, GM has invested $900 million in new battery development labs in Michigan. The company is also continuing work toward its goal of selling only electric vehicles by 2035. While GM initially pledged to invest $35 billion between 2020 and 2025 on electric and autonomous vehicles, it has since said future investments will depend on consumer demand.
