GlobalFoundries, one of the world’s leading semiconductor manufacturers, is making a strategic entry into India by setting up a design and testing centre in Kolkata’s Salt Lake IT hub. The initiative, supported by the West Bengal government, is seen as a significant step toward building a robust semiconductor ecosystem in Eastern India

Growing Semiconductor Ecosystem in West Bengal
Alongside GlobalFoundries, Santech Global, a U.S.-based innovator in semiconductors and nanoelectronics, has also expressed interest in entering the Kolkata market. The West Bengal government is actively facilitating these partnerships, offering infrastructure support and policy backing.
Plans are also underway to launch joint internship programs between GlobalFoundries and local universities, enabling technology students in West Bengal to gain real-world experience and access global industry standards.
A spokesperson from the state government confirmed, “We are in consultation with GlobalFoundries to extend all support. This marks the beginning of a long-term vision to develop a vibrant semiconductor and electronics manufacturing ecosystem in West Bengal.”
