Global financial firms expand India presence through new GCC investments

India is emerging as a preferred destination for global financial institutions looking to scale technology, operations, and risk capabilities through global capability centers (GCCs). Several international players are now strengthening their footprint to tap into the country’s skilled talent base and cost advantages.

Japan’s Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp. and Switzerland’s Julius Baer Group are planning to establish GCC operations in India. They are joining US-based investment firms Charles Schwab Corp. and Vanguard Group, with collective hiring expected to reach at least 1,000 employees this year across cities such as Chennai and Hyderabad, according to people familiar with the plans.

The move highlights India’s growing role as a global GCC hub, where banks and financial firms build technology, compliance, and operational functions supporting worldwide business needs. Companies are increasingly leveraging India’s mature delivery ecosystem while managing costs efficiently.

The expansion also comes amid tighter US immigration policies. Higher visa costs and stricter scrutiny of skilled-worker programs like H-1B under US President Donald Trump have encouraged organizations to localize roles in India instead of relocating talent overseas.

“Rising compliance costs and tightening visa regimes are accelerating an inevitable shift to India’s GCC industry,” said Simar Singh, partner at KPMG. “Banks need regulatory capability at scale, and today that combination of talent, cost, and delivery maturity exists only in India,” he said.

Other global firms, including Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, are also setting up GCC operations in the country. The planned roles will cover research, payments, operations, and digital assets, with a strong focus on artificial intelligence and automation as companies centralize global processes.

Recently, UBS Group AG launched a new GCC facility in Hyderabad, further reinforcing the trend.
