GitHub Copilot, the AI-powered coding assistant from Microsoft-owned GitHub, has now reached over 20 million users, according to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. A GitHub spokesperson confirmed that this number represents all-time users, marking significant growth from the 15 million reported just three months ago.
While Microsoft has not shared how many of these users are active daily or monthly, the rise in user count points to increasing interest in AI coding tools. GitHub Copilot is now used by 90 percent of the Fortune 100 companies, and its enterprise adoption has jumped by 75 percent compared to the previous quarter.
Nadella also highlighted that GitHub Copilot has become a bigger business than GitHub itself was at the time of Microsoft’s acquisition in 2018. This shows strong demand for AI tools that boost productivity for developers and software teams.
Though Copilot’s user base remains small when compared to mainstream AI chatbots like ChatGPT or Gemini, which attract hundreds of millions of users each month, it has found success in its niche market. Developers and businesses are showing a willingness to pay for reliable AI tools that streamline coding workflows.
GitHub Copilot faces competition, particularly from Cursor, another AI coding platform gaining traction in the enterprise sector. In March, Cursor reportedly had over a million daily users and an annualized recurring revenue of around 200 million dollars. That figure has since climbed to more than 500 million dollars, indicating even stronger usage.
Both GitHub Copilot and Cursor are now building similar AI-powered features, such as tools that automatically review code and detect bugs. They are also introducing AI agents designed to handle entire programming tasks without human input. Nadella noted strong momentum in GitHub’s AI coding agent developments during the latest earnings call.
GitHub is not alone in this space. Competitors like Google, which acquired the team behind AI coding startup Windsurf, and Cognition, creator of Devin, are also aiming to lead. Meanwhile, companies like OpenAI and Anthropic are developing their own AI coding tools with models such as Codex and Claude Code.
The market for AI coding assistants is quickly becoming one of the most competitive areas in the AI industry.
