In a major step to tackle cybercrimes, Ghaziabad police have changed their process for registering cyber fraud cases. Now, victims of cyber frauds, no matter the amount involved, can directly file a complaint at the cybercrime police station at Ghanta Ghar Kotwali.
Officials said that this arrangement has been made to support victims and complainants who fall prey to online fraud.
Earlier, cyber frauds involving less than ₹5 lakh were handled at local police stations, while larger cases were sent to cybercrime police stations.
“From now, the restriction for the amount involved has been done away with. To expedite incoming cases, we have also added more personnel,” said Piyush Kumar Singh, additional DCP (crime).
To strengthen the system, the sanctioned strength of the cybercrime police station has been raised to 240 from 140. Out of this, 50 personnel have already been appointed.
“To expedite investigations, the number of inspectors has been increased from 5 to 17 and the number of sub inspectors has gone up to 46, with the addition of 21 new SIs,” Singh added.
The police have also deputed three ACPs of Kotwali, Masuri, and Indirapuram as nodal officers for the three zones of the Ghaziabad Commissionerate, namely city, rural, and trans Hindon, for better coordination and monitoring of cases.
According to police data, 368 cybercrime cases were registered at the cybercrime police station in 2024, while 175 cases have already been registered from January 1 to August 27 this year.
In 2025, around 566 FIRs related to cyber frauds were registered at different police stations between January 1 and July 31.
In addition, 11,000 cybercrime complaints were filed through the National Cyber Reporting Platform between January 1 and July 31 this year, officials said.
With the support of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, banks, and courts, about ₹35 crore of defrauded money was recovered and returned to victims till August 27.
Officials also said that about 12,500 mobile numbers linked to fraud were blocked, along with 170 mobile apps and 21 websites connected to cyber frauds till August 27.
