A major cyber fraud operation promising false insurance gains has been exposed in Ghaziabad after police arrested five men accused of cheating victims of more than ₹95 lakh. The accused allegedly posed as senior executives of insurance companies and collected money by offering attractive policy returns. After receiving payments, they issued fake receipts to appear genuine. Police have registered a case under relevant BNS sections for cheating and impersonation, along with provisions of the IT Act.
The arrests followed a specific tip-off that led the Cyber Crime Branch to keep the suspects under watch before conducting a raid on Saturday. All five accused are residents of Ghaziabad and worked as a close-knit group using stolen customer data. Rishabh Kumar, aged 39, was identified as a key operator with a criminal history. Vinay Gupta, aged 55, managed logistics along with Ashish Pawar, aged 31. Himanshu Tyagi, aged 28, and Yashpal Verma, aged 28, handled calls with victims. ADCP Piyush Kumar Singh said the operation recovered strong evidence linking the group to multiple fraud cases.
Investigators found that the gang relied on insider information to run the scam. Victim databases were allegedly sourced from former insurance company employees Sharvan Tiwari, Himanshu Chaudhary, and another unidentified associate. Using these details, the accused contacted existing policyholders while posing as customer care staff of well-known insurers. They offered “high-return” life insurance and other policies and convinced victims to transfer funds. Fake receipts were then sent to build trust and delay suspicion.
The raid uncovered twelve mobile phones, twelve ATM cards, eight SIM cards, one cheque book, and one car used during the fraud. Forensic analysis confirmed the total cheated amount at ₹95 lakh. Police also noted that Kumar and Gupta had earlier been arrested in Gujarat in similar cyber fraud cases. Authorities are now tracking absconding suspects and working to identify mule bank accounts and recover the money. Officials have urged citizens to verify any insurance-related calls directly with their insurers to avoid falling prey to such scams.
