Google has introduced several new capabilities to its AI assistant Gemini within its Google Workspace apps, making the tool more personalised, collaborative, and capable of handling tasks from scratch.
The biggest update allows Gemini to generate a complete first draft in a blank file using just a single prompt. Earlier, the assistant could only help improve existing content. It could edit text in Google Docs, suggest layouts in Google Slides, and add formulas or formatting changes in Google Sheets. Now, the AI can begin working on an empty file and build the first version of a document automatically.
According to the company, the Gemini side panel can now pull relevant information from a user’s files, emails, and the internet to generate content. In Docs, the AI can draft entire documents using this information. It can also refine sections and match a user’s tone through the Match writing style option. The Match doc format feature allows it to follow the formatting style of a reference document.
The update also improves functionality in Sheets. Users can now prompt Gemini to create, organise, and edit full spreadsheets. The assistant can gather relevant information from files and emails to structure the spreadsheet. For larger tasks, the Fill with Gemini feature can generate custom text, organise data into categories, and summarise details inside tables. It can also use information from Search to fill missing data.
Slides receives similar enhancements. Gemini can now generate fully editable slides that include templates, layouts, text, images, and diagrams. It can also collaborate on editing existing slides. The company said it is developing another feature that will allow users to generate an entire presentation deck with a single prompt.
In Google Drive, a new AI Overview now appears at the top of search results to summarise information. The Ask Gemini in Drive feature also allows users to ask complex questions related to documents, emails, calendars, and the web.
These new features are currently available for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. Updates for Docs, Sheets, and Slides are available globally, while the new Drive capabilities are currently limited to the United States. For now, the features support only the English language.
