India is close to achieving a major milestone in its space programme, with 90 per cent of the work on its first human spaceflight already completed, according to Dr K. Sivan, Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation. The Gaganyaan mission, intended to place Indian astronauts in space, is scheduled for launch by 2027.
Before sending humans into orbit, the space agency will conduct three uncrewed test flights to verify all systems. These missions will demonstrate India’s capability to perform what has never been done before—a significant leap for India’s growing space ambitions.
The Gaganyaan mission could make India the fourth nation to send humans into space, joining the United States, Russia and China. The programme, announced by the Prime Minister last year, is aimed at showcasing self-reliance in space technology and human-rated systems.
Astronaut training is already underway in Bengaluru, where crew members are undergoing advanced simulations and preparing for a mission capsule built with robust safety features for multiple emergency scenarios. The upcoming test flights over the next two years will demonstrate engineering strength and mark a new era in human space exploration for India.
