Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has revealed a transformative mobility plan for India that includes hyperloop systems, electric rapid transport, and ropeways to boost connectivity in cities and remote regions. The plan also includes the expansion of highways and the adoption of new green technologies to improve transport efficiency and reduce pollution.
Speaking in an interview, the Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari shared that 25,000 km of two-lane highways will be upgraded to four lanes, with a goal to build 100 km of roads per day. He highlighted projects such as mobile-based driving tests, flex-fuel engines from 11 top automakers, and a nationwide electric mass rapid transport system.
“We are driving innovation. A revolution in mass mobility is underway,” said Gadkari. He confirmed that ropeways, cable cars, and funicular railways are being constructed across 360 locations, including Kedarnath, with 60 already in progress. These systems will improve access in hilly and remote areas, with project costs ranging from ₹200 crore to ₹5,000 crore.
Pilot projects for hyperloop, Metrino pod taxis, and pillar-based mass transit are being explored in cities like Delhi and Bengaluru. A 135-seater electric bus trial has also been launched in Nagpur, featuring airline-grade seating, air-conditioning, and fast charging within 30 to 40 minutes. If successful, similar services will be rolled out across major routes including Delhi to Chandigarh, Jaipur, Dehradun, and Mumbai to Pune and Aurangabad.
Gadkari stated that India’s highway length has grown from 91,287 km in 2013-14 to 1,46,204 km today. High-speed corridors have expanded from 93 km to 2,474 km in the same period. Gadkari also announced plans for planting 20 to 25 crore trees along highways and creating a tree bank with the environment ministry.
New construction methods, such as precast technology and AI-based road safety tools like drones and surveillance cameras, are being implemented to improve efficiency and safety.
Gadkari added that green transport initiatives will lower emissions, reduce fuel imports worth ₹22 lakh crore annually, and help cut logistics costs from 14 percent to 9 percent of GDP.
