Foxconn rapidly scales iPhone production with massive hiring at Bengaluru plant

India’s electronics manufacturing landscape is seeing a sharp shift as Foxconn accelerates operations at its new iPhone assembly facility near Bengaluru. In just 9 months, the company has hired nearly 30,000 workers, marking one of the fastest factory ramp ups recorded in the country, according to a sources.

Located in Devanahalli, the facility spans 300 acres and began test production of iPhone 16 models earlier this year. It has now moved on to assembling iPhone 17 Pro Max devices, with more than 80% of total output being exported. The rapid expansion reflects Apple’s strategy to diversify manufacturing beyond China and position India as a key pillar in its global supply chain.

The workforce composition at the plant is notable. Around 80% of employees are women, most of them first time workers between the ages of 19 and 24. To support the growing workforce, Foxconn has constructed 6 large dormitories offering free accommodation and subsidised meals. Average monthly wages are about ₹18,000, placing them among the highest paid roles for women in blue collar manufacturing.

At peak capacity next year, the Devanahalli facility is expected to employ up to 50,000 people. The campus is also planned to develop into a mini township with residential, medical, educational, and recreational infrastructure.

Foxconn is investing close to ₹20,000 crore in the project, which is set to become India’s largest factory in terms of employment and production capacity once fully operational. Supported by India’s production linked incentive scheme, the Devanahalli campus will eventually house up to a dozen iPhone assembly lines and is expected to surpass Foxconn’s existing facility in Tamil Nadu.

With all iPhone 17 models now assembled in India, the expansion highlights the country’s rising importance as a global manufacturing alternative and a critical link in Apple’s supply chain.
