Former Apple CEO John Sculley has declared that OpenAI is the first real competitor Apple has faced in decades. Speaking at the Zeta Live conference, Sculley warned that Apple risks falling behind if it does not fully embrace artificial intelligence.
Sculley, who led Apple from 1983 to 1993, argued that the company needs to move from the “apps era” to the “agentic era,” where smart AI agents perform tasks for users without relying on multiple separate apps.
According to Sculley, Apple has lagged behind other tech giants such as OpenAI, Google, Meta, and Amazon in AI-focused innovation and frequent product updates. He highlighted delays, including the revamp of Siri, as evidence that Apple has not kept pace with AI advancements.
Sculley also suggested that Apple’s next CEO should be someone capable of guiding the company through this AI-first transition. He said the new leader must focus on building experiences driven by AI agents rather than traditional apps.
He explained that the shift from apps to AI agents could also transform business models. Software built around apps primarily sells tools, whereas AI agents could move the industry toward subscription-based models, generating revenue as long as users rely on the AI.
In a related development, Apple design legend Jony Ive has joined OpenAI through the acquisition of his device startup earlier this year. Many hope that Ive’s design expertise will help bridge the gap between AI and hardware, potentially accelerating innovation in the AI space.
Sculley’s remarks underscore a broader shift in the tech world: Apple’s long-standing dominance may now be challenged not by another smartphone maker or gadget company, but by AI-first innovators shaping the next generation of technology.
