Flipkart appoints Balaji Thiagarajan as its new Chief Product and Technology Officer

Flipkart has named Balaji Thiagarajan as its new Chief Product and Technology Officer, a move aimed at strengthening its technological and innovation capabilities. The announcement was made by CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy in an internal communication. Thiagarajan takes over from Jeyandran Venugopal, who left earlier this year to join another major retailer.

With more than 25 years of experience at leading global companies including Google, Microsoft, Uber and Yahoo, Thiagarajan brings extensive expertise to the role. He is expected to accelerate Flipkart’s AI-driven future and enhance its position in a fast-changing digital landscape.

Krishnamurthy underscored Thiagarajan’s strategic value, saying, “His deep expertise in AI will be invaluable to us as we continue to build a future-ready organisation.” He added that Thiagarajan will focus on driving AI adoption, advancing Flipkart’s technology architecture for next-generation applications, and scaling innovation across the company’s operations.

Thiagarajan holds nine U.S. patents and has an impressive academic background with a BS in Electronics and Telecommunication from the University of Pune, an MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Syracuse University and an MBA from Wharton. Most recently, he was founder and CEO of Kasu.ai, a US-based company that developed AI strategies to automate business processes.

As part of the leadership change, Flipkart’s core technology leaders including Ramesh Gururaja, Sandhya Kapoor, Bharath Chinamanthur, Amit Sachan and Gaurav Mathur will now report directly to him.

The appointment comes at a pivotal time for Flipkart, following its recent $950 million funding round led by Google. The investment and leadership change are expected to accelerate Flipkart’s growth, strengthen its innovation agenda and position the company as a stronger competitor in the ecommerce sector.
