As India tightens restrictions on Chinese technology, Finland is emerging as a trusted partner, offering advanced solutions in secure telecom infrastructure, clean energy, and maritime innovation.
Ambassador Kimmo Lähdevirta highlighted Nokia’s Bengaluru research and development centre – now a 12,000-person ecosystem – as a key example of Finland’s commitment to India. He emphasised the company’s focus on local talent and cybersecurity, which are vital to India’s next-generation 5G rollout. According to the ambassador, Finland provides “reliable alternatives” tailored to India’s need for resilience in critical sectors, aligning with global concerns over restricted technology transfers from China.
Beyond telecommunications, Finland’s industrial expertise in biofuels, smart grids, and precast construction – represented by companies such as Wärtsilä, Valmet, KONE, and Elematic – fits well with India’s goal of decarbonising its fast-growing urban economy. These collaborations not only bring technology exchange but also create employment opportunities. Nokia, for instance, plans to expand its research and development workforce in India.
The economic relationship between the two nations continues to strengthen, with bilateral trade valued at €3 billion, Finnish investments reaching €4 billion, and Indian investments at €1 billion. This strong economic foundation supports efforts to advance the proposed India-EU Free Trade Agreement, which Finland views as a vital step amid ongoing global uncertainty.
In essence, Finland is positioning itself as a strategic and dependable partner to help India reduce its reliance on Chinese technology while accelerating its shift toward a sustainable, innovation-led economy. The collaboration promises mutual benefits, enhanced national security and growth opportunities cementing a forward-looking partnership between the two nations.
