In the aftermath of a cyber incident, the Ministry of Finance has kept its Mijn Schatkist portal offline, leaving around 1,600 institutions unable to access balances or generate reports. There is currently no clarity on when the system will be restored.
The treasury banking portal was taken offline after unauthorized access to ministry systems was detected. Finance Minister Eelco Heinen informed the House of Representatives about the situation. Authorities shut down systems as part of the investigation and to strengthen security measures.
Initial findings suggest that intruders gained access to systems supporting core processes within the ministry. However, officials have not confirmed what data was affected or how deep the breach went. The unauthorized access was first identified on March 19, and systems were taken offline on March 23. No further updates have been shared so far.
The disruption mainly affects local governments, courts, and affiliated schools that use the Mijn Schatkist portal to manage funds with the national treasury. Despite this, institutions still have full access to their funds. Payments are continuing through regular banking channels, and some services are being handled manually where required.
Reassuring stakeholders, Heinen said, “You can rest assured that everyone involved is working day and night to resolve this incident.” However, he did not provide a timeline for full recovery.
Importantly, services from the Tax and Customs Administration and the Benefits Agency remain unaffected. Citizens can continue to file tax returns, and benefit payments are being processed on time.
This incident is part of a wider pattern of cyberattacks. Last month, the Judicial Institutions Service faced a serious breach where attackers accessed internal systems for months. The Judicial ICT Organization was also hacked twice due to firewall configuration issues. In April 2025, a major data breach impacted multiple ministries, including those handling interior and economic affairs. More recently, the municipality of Epe also experienced a cyberattack.
